RESOLVE YOUR DEPRESSION

Click to go back

“Depression is a problem that is growing steadily across all age groups and is the most common mood disorder affecting Westerners.” (Ref. Dr. Michael Yapko).

Despite the overstated and oversimplified view that suggests depression is caused solely by a neurochemical imbalance in the brain, clinical research evidence makes it quite clear that depression, and its causes, are about much more than “bad chemistry”. Research to date states that in fact there is no neurochemical imbalance (chemical imbalance in the brain) – in depressive illnesses.

In fact, depression can have many causes, and there are many factors that influence its cause and progress. The cause of Depression is ‘driven’ by our psychology.

Knowledge of depression has greatly expanded in recent years, establishing the essential role of psychotherapy in treatment.

Depression is often a response to those hurtful life situations and experiences which cause a lack, or loss of awareness of our own uniqueness and a negative attitude towards the new. These blocks in our development give a sense of inadequacy and we fall into a depression.

Depression is characterised by a withdrawal of interest in the outside world, and a negative, internal, attitude toward our self. When depressed we become withdrawn or morose and self preoccupied. Mentally and emotionally we seem flat. We ‘worry’ or ‘ruminate’ almost constantly. When we are made aware of the new – we feel fright or emotional crisis. This leads to further inner conflict between the emerging new and the repetitive limiting pattern – resulting in a division in consciousness.

All of this often leads to ‘bad’ sleep patterns – which further exacerbates the ‘flat’ or depressed state. Even though – depression often manifests in ‘staying in bed’ – and ‘shutting out’ the world – and life – the sleep state, and particularly Dream periods, are not restful for the brain and therefore the mind and body.

This inner conflict and division is evident in examples (which tend to repeat in thoughts and dreams) such as:

“I am doing this but I don’t really want to.”
“I keep shifting from one thing to another.”
“I am travelling but I am not getting anywhere.”

These are generalised comments for you to consider. One of my fundamental jobs as your Therapist, having first established with you what you want to achieve, is to help you to discover: “How do you know that you are depressed, inside of yourself?”

This inner knowing is unique to you and to your life experiences. However your unique inner knowing – will often have patterns of continuous ‘worrying’ thoughts, rumination, and self doubt – or self invalidation.
Does Psychotherapy really work? Yes it does. Thousands of research studies show that Psychotherapy is as effective, if not more effective, than antidepressants. And one of the many bonuses of Psychotherapy is that as it resolves underlying causes of the depression and guides you towards and teaches you new productive life skills and behaviours – Psychotherapy can ensure that there are no future relapses.

OK – here’s what I believe is the fundamental and important aspect to you and resolving this problem of depression.

Sit back – and ‘strap in’ – this next part I’m going to talk with you about – is really important

Our remarkable – and mysterious brain – produces Serotonin. We need Serotonin – during our sleep and dream stages – Serotonin facilitates our unconscious, during dream sleep, to produce solutions and resolutions to our problems.

And herein lies the terrible paradox – Whilst during our day time, or waking hours when we worry, when we ruminate round and round  - and yes round and round the same old problem – we use up our resources of Serotonin.

Therefore – we do not sleep well.

We are unable to search for and produce solutions and resolutions to problems in our dream sleep.

Our dreams are anxious dreams, rather than dreams that explore solutions and resolutions. We wake up anxious and un-rested – we wake in the same cycle of worry and anxiety.

I will help you to break this cycle. It is likely that you do spend quite a lot of time in bed? Or a lot of time sleeping? However it is unlikely that you wake up refreshed and bouncing? Right? So, as I said, one of the first things we are more than likely to do in our Work together is to ensure that you sleep and rest well, ensure that you stop the cycle of worrying or ruminating, therefore stop you ‘eating up’ your supply of Serotonin, therefore dream ‘healing’ dreams – that is dreams that are searching for and coming with solutions and resolutions for you – and you will very quickly begin to awaken refreshed, more optimistic and energised.

Your ASSESSMENT CONSULTATION will be booked for you at a time and date that is convenient for you and will last for approximately one hour. This session is Free – and can be done by phone, SKYPE, or face to face at my consulting rooms in Keswick, Cumbria, in the English Lake District. If travelling to Keswick for a weekly session is unwieldy for you I can often conduct Therapy Sessions by phone. However face to face Work, though not always essential, can often be much better, in that for example, by phone you may tell me that you are comfortable and relaxed, and face to face I can observe from you breathing, heart rate and so on that in fact you are uncomfortable.

Also go to Therapeutic Breaks in The Heart of the English Lake district for information on our accommodation – which is a sweet cosy cottage, which sleep four people right on the banks of the beautiful River Greta.

Many clients who have worked with me have often said: “I have several of the symptoms on your list – where do I begin?” during your ASSESSMENT CONSULTATION I will help you to discover where you need to begin, and often several symptoms or problems will be resolved and healed during the course of therapy.

Whatever your problem I can help!
