YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT

You want to lose weight.

Good.

Maybe you are thinking – that you have tried everything to lose weight.

Absolutely everything. And whatever you’ve read and learnt and tried, it just hasn’t worked for you. Or it’s maybe partly worked for you, or worked for a while.

Now, because you are determined to succeed, you’re reading what we have to say.

Sure, I know that part of you is optimistic thinking – “This time it will work for me.” We will ensure that you really get to know this part of you, the determined part. We will get you to fully empower the determined part of you.

Can you hear, or maybe even see, – the part of you that is also saying, either in words or images, “Everything fails for Me.”?

Somewhere inside you – is there a voice, or image, in your mind telling you or showing you that everything has failed for you?

The problem we all have with these inner ‘voices’ – which are expecting failure in some aspect or other of our lives – is that they are ‘unconscious’ communications, that is we rarely if ever consciously ‘hear’ these voices, or see the images that the unconscious is constantly creating.

So, even though we have been asking you if you can hear or see the part or parts of your mind which are expecting failure, it is likely that you cannot hear or see, because those inner words and images are often happening at an unconscious level of mind.

I will get back to this, the unconscious inner communications, but first do something for me, I’d like you to pretend you are my client. Pretend you are experiencing a personal one to one, powerful sessions with me.
OK, are you up for this?

I’m going to ask you to begin by imagining yourself in my consulting room. I’ll tell you what it’s like.

High ceiling, polished wooden floor. The walls’ are a rich deep red. There are large comfortable pale brown leather sofas. The long Georgian windows overlook a wide sparkling, rushing river and on the far bank, there’s a forest.

In a while I am going to ask you to STOP READING, and relax back in your seat get comfortable and imagine, picture yourself in my consulting room with me.

I think it is pointless to give you a load more information on weight loss. I believe that you are full of information, you’re probably an expert on diets and nutrition, low fats, carbohydrates, proteins, exercise and fitness. Now is the time for you to do something, to act, to start, right now on the journey to achieve your goal – weight loss. I invite you to begin right now to take the first steps on your journey, a very personal journey for you to achieve your weight loss First, before I ask you to stop reading and I invite you into my consulting room, I want to tell you a story, an important story I heard. A story that will let you know that you haven’t tried everything yet to lose your weight, to achieve your goal. Having said that I really do know that it feels to you as if you have tried everything.

Before you begin your journey to your goal, your ideal weight, with me I’d like to tell you a fabulously enlightening story.

Edison, he’s inventing the light bulb. Someone says to him “That’s your nine hundred and ninety ninth thousand failure to make a light bulb.” Edison replies, “No, I’ve just discovered the nine hundred and ninety ninth thousandth way how not to make a light bulb. And I’ve learnt how to make some very interesting explosions along the way.” Of course Edison did discover just what did work! What I’m saying to you is this journey will work for you – you haven’t tried everything – don’t give up – Edison didn’t.

OK – in a moment, I will ask you to stop reading. I want you to sit upright, feel a feeling of alertness, both in your mind and your body. This isn’t a time of getting sleepy and trance like, it’s an inner time of preparing to feel ready for action, a feeling of anticipation that you are about to embark on an important journey, feel some stirring of inner energy, a sense of anticipation. If you find it tricky, then spend a few moments bringing up a memory of a past experience when you did feel alert, both mentally and physically.

I don’t want you to come into my consulting room in some kind of drifting away, trance like state; I want you to arrive in my consulting room ready for action.

Two other reasons for sitting upright and being alert.

1) It will enable you to access the right state in your body for making internal images and pictures. Also most people’s subtle physiology works in much the same way, most people turn their eyes up and to the right to access images. Just have a practice with yourself for only a couple of seconds – picture for example your front door! Notice – where did your eyes move? You may want to turn your eyes deliberately slightly up and to the right to try this out for yourself. Or for some people when they make inner pictures the eyes stare out of focus straight forward. Experiment for yourself.

Reason 2) You’re going on a journey, right? And you are going to deliberately create enthusiasm. Your brain will never cooperate with you being successful if you’re giving it incongruent messages. You will fail – because you’re brain will be set up for failure if you’re physical position is slumped, shallow breathing – you are not ready for ACTION – and your brain will believe you are going nowhere on this journey!

I heard a story of Robert Dilts, a developer and consultant in Neuro Linguist Programming (NLP) since its creation in 1975. This story impressed me. Mr. Dilts had been studying speed reading for a number of years and found that those who read the fastest make the most of their physiology. One man who Mr. Dilts studied does the following to get himself ready to speed read: he takes a book, sets it down and stands back, as if getting ready to pounce on it. He approaches it, grabs it, looks it over, turns it around quickly, over and over in his hands, and then stands back again. Then he really gets into it. He cracks his knuckles, loosens his collar, takes a few deep breaths and grabs it again as he sits down and gets into reading it quickly.

OK?

So, I want you to feel as alert as you possibly can, sit up right, feel ready for action, think outrageous, think I’m going on an outrageous journey, flex a few muscles, roll your sleeves up, loosen your collar!. First thing to do when you stop reading is deliberately turn your eyes up and to the right, if this is the way your eyes want to go to make images. Then when you feel ready maybe close your eyes and work at imagining yourself in my consulting room.

Do you notice I use the word – work? This journey from its first steps will take effort, courage, passion, determination, work, from you. You’re going to do an outstanding job – and you’ll get your reward, you will achieve your goal – you will achieve your weight loss.

Before you go to my consulting room I’ll just tell you that one of the things that I do know about you is, you are very imaginative, you are very good at using your imagination.

How imaginative are you prepared to be, to achieve your goal?
I’m asking you to be very, very imaginative. Not just good at using your imagination, but outstandingly good. This way you will get excellent results.

READY? Let’s go!

Imagine rich red walls. Polished wood floor.

Wonder about hearing the sounds of the river – it sounds alert – it is moving continuously onwards towards its goal – the ocean thirty miles away.

Consider the smells of the forest, the scent of earth and trees, the scent of bracken and ferns.

Feel yourself, or see yourself sitting upright and comfortable and safe on my pale brown leather sofa.

Just be there for a few moments – in my consulting room and work for a few moments on feeling an inner sense of expectancy. That’s all you need to do for now, start to generate inside yourself a feeling of anticipation, of preparation for a new and different journey, a feeling of anticipation that you will reach your goal.

I want you to take a little time to create a metaphor, or allegory for the journey you are about to take.

Imagine you are about to embark on a real journey, a journey somewhere in the world, or into outer space if you prefer! Be different, be a little crazy. Imagine your journey to somewhere you’ve never been before. Somewhere you’ve been yearning to go. And please, don’t fall for that inner voice that may be saying: “There’s nowhere I want to go. I want to stay right where I am.”

If you fall for that voice – there’s absolutely no point in taking these first steps with me – because – you will stay right where you are and nothing will change.

Where will you go on your imagined, metaphorical journey? – Make it somewhere that will excite you. Somewhere that will take effort and determination from you. Somewhere that will be demanding of you. An adventure. Somewhere that some of your friends, family or acquaintances would say: “That’s preposterous. You will never get there. No one goes there.”

Why am I asking you to do this crazy thing?

Why would I ask you to imagine a journey to somewhere preposterous, somewhere different. Somewhere that you think is exciting, wonderful- maybe exotic and rare, somewhere where other people in your life would say: “You’ll never get there.”?

There are several important and valid reasons for my request. Here are some of those valid reasons:

1) Your weight problem isn’t a problem with your body – seriously, the problem is a mind set. There’s absolutely no point whatsoever in me telling you about what your body needs, or doesn’t need, the right and wrong foods for you, the kind of exercise you need. I’d be wasting your time – and mine. I know you know all these things – the food you need the food you don’t need, the exercise. You know it all. SO – what’s been stopping you acting on all this knowledge and information you have? Your mind set. We are going to work together – on your mind set – and you will achieve permanent lasting change.

2) The mind, unconsciously thinks in metaphor. Remember your dreams? Dreams are in metaphors. Instead of, as in dreams, your mind communicating something important to you, you are communicating to your mind something important for you – via the language of the unconscious mind – metaphor and symbols. You are letting your mind and brain know that this is something important for you to achieve. And the something that is important is that you are about to take a journey unlike any other journey – a journey to your goal. Your brain will begin to prepare you both mentally and physically to achieve your weight loss.

3) Why a preposterous place? Why not a relaxing beach at a well known holiday destination?

Well, first of all you aren’t going on a holiday with me, I am assisting you on going on a journey of exploration, a journey with a very important goal for you. Also, the reason for you to take a journey to a place you’ve never been before is because you have never been on this journey before. And also, as I mentioned earlier, it is likely that deep in your unconscious mind you will encounter the inner voices, or inner images of failure. Just as there would be outer voices, from friends or family saying: “You’ll never get there,” – I am helping you prepare yourself for those inner voices. I’m going to help you negotiate those inner voices of failure in the same way as you would negotiate outer voices, from friends or family. I’m going to help you communicate internally with the negative voices. I’m going to help you have such energy and determination to reach your chosen goal that, as you probably would with the external voices you’ll communicate back internally with yourself something like: “OK. I hear what your are saying. But I am determined. I will do everything necessary to get there.”

So, ready? Stop reading for the next ten minutes, and take the first preparatory steps for your journey by simply imagining yourself in my consulting room, the rich red walls, pale brown leather sofa, polished wooden floor, high ceilings, the sound of the river. Be there, in my consulting room, don’t just see yourself there – feel with all your inner senses that you are there. This is instructing your brain that you are really starting work to achieve your goal. And whilst you’re there, sitting on my sofa, then think about your metaphorical journey to some rarely visited place. Then float yourself off my sofa and enter fully making that journey. Whilst your doing that, listen in a detached manner for all the inner voices. The positive supportive, determined inner voices, and the negative ‘failure’ inner voices. Then gently bring yourself ‘back’ to the place where you are now.

Please – stop reading now.

Hi, how are you doing? Did you begin to have a sense of my consulting room? Did you begin to have a sense of determination to achieve your goal using the metaphor of beginning an unusual journey?

It takes effort. That’s OK. I will urge you on.

Do you have a clear idea yet of your metaphorical destination?
Will you journey to outer space?
How ambitious can you get?
Make your destination glorious for you.
Where have you chosen?
I don’t know your chosen destination, I don’t need to know.
Could it be you have chosen the Arctic Circle?
The Antarctic?
Or a rarely heard of area of Africa, the Far East, Australia?

I advice you not to make your destination a fantasy world – like Narnia. We need to make your journey and your destination concrete in your mind and therefore in your brain. We don’t want your mind to respond to a fantasy – this is real, a real inner journey and a very real goal.

Think about all the preparations you would need to make for such a journey – gather within you the same kind of energy you’d need for a journey like yours. Make it a journey that will take you several weeks or even months. It’s going to take you weeks or months to reach your goal weight.

Think about your metaphorical journey. Change your mind about your destination if you need. You might know with absolute certainty already exactly where you want to arrive. You might be vacillating thinking – Oh, I could go there, no I’d prefer to go there. That’s fine. This is important enough to give yourself time. Maybe go to sleep with the question in your mind: Where is the right and best place for me to go? Work with your dreams and let your dreams help you. How can your dreams help you? Your dreams can help you because dreams come from a part of your unconscious mind – and your unconscious mind wants to help you.

You have a dream of your perfect weight – turn your dream now into your goal and you will achieve it. All goals start in the mind – from Edison’s light bulb to Brunell’s bridges.

My hope for you today is that you have taken the first step of absolute determination and set your mind and brain already ‘in motion’ towards your goal of weight loss. Start a - journal immediately – just find a notebook or paper now – don’t wait any longer to carry on, don’t have taken these first all important steps and then ‘sit down’ again – carry on the energy in you – by writing down all that you experienced of your unique inner journey. Make a note of all the inner voices – those that are all for you getting there and those voices that are against you getting there. Do this exercise every day for a few days – honing your insights – getting to know the details of those inner voices. Keep on writing everything down. Refine it – make this journey thee most important thing in your life right now!

If travelling to Keswick for a weekly session is unwieldy for you I can often conduct Therapy Sessions by phone. However face to face Work, though not always essential, can often be much better, in that for example, by phone you may tell me that you are comfortable and relaxed, and face to face I can observe from your breathing, heart rate and so on that in fact you are uncomfortable.
