Feel Stress Free
Dr. Hans Selye is often referred to as the father of stress
research
Selye classified reactions to stress as The General Adaptation
Syndrome which has three stages:
1)
Alarm Reaction
2)
Resistance and
3)
Exhaustion.
During the alarm Reaction, the stressor activates the body to
prepare for
fight
to fight off an aggressor or predator or
flight
to run away as fast as you can from an aggressor or predator.
Alarm Reaction:
Electrical and hormonal signals are involved in mobilizing the
energy needed for an emergency. Heart rate, breathing and
perspiration increase. The pupils of the eyes dilate. Adrenalin and
Cortisol are released. Stored energy floods the blood stream. Selye
suggests that if stress is strong enough death may result during the
Alarm Reaction.
Resistance:
During the resistance stage of adaptation to stress, the signs of
alarm reaction are diminished to non existent.
Exhaustion:
However, if the stressful stimuli or responses are not diminished
here is where the problem lies the stage of resistance is followed
immediately by a stage of exhaustion. During this stage the exposure
to a stressor has nearly depleted the bodys adaptive energy. The
signs and experience of the initial alarm reaction reappear, but,
they do not abate. Resistance is decreased and illness may follow.
The General Adaptation Syndrome has great importance in an early
theory of stress and disease. It motivated much research
contributing to our understanding of stress and resistance as
factors in every illness. Stress may interfere with our ability to
resist most diseases.
