Feel Stress Free

Dr. Hans Selye is often referred to as the ‘father of stress research’
Selye classified reactions to stress as The General Adaptation Syndrome – which has three stages:
1) Alarm Reaction
2) Resistance and
3) Exhaustion.

During the alarm Reaction, the stressor activates the body to prepare for fight – to fight off an aggressor or predator – or flight – to run away as fast as you can from an aggressor or predator.

Alarm Reaction: Electrical and hormonal signals are involved in mobilizing the energy needed for an emergency. Heart rate, breathing and perspiration increase. The pupils of the eyes dilate. Adrenalin and Cortisol are released. Stored energy floods the blood stream. Selye suggests that if stress is strong enough death may result during the Alarm Reaction.

Resistance: During the resistance stage of adaptation to stress, the signs of alarm reaction are diminished to non existent.

Exhaustion: However, if the stressful stimuli or responses are not diminished – here is where the problem lies – the stage of resistance is followed immediately by a stage of exhaustion. During this stage the exposure to a stressor has nearly depleted the body’s adaptive energy. The signs and experience of the initial alarm reaction reappear, but, they do not abate. Resistance is decreased and illness may follow.

The General Adaptation Syndrome has great importance in an early theory of stress and disease. It motivated much research contributing to our understanding of stress and resistance as factors in every illness. Stress may interfere with our ability to resist most diseases.

Related to Stress - In the USA -

30 million have some form of major heart or blood disease.
1 million have a heart attack every year.
25 million have high blood pressure.
8 million have ulcers.
12 million are recorded alcoholics.
5 billion doses of tranquilisers are prescribed every year!

OK – so it really is vitally important that you do something to change your responses to stress!

Talk to us – we can help.

Whatever your problem, that you are dealing with, work, relationships, illness and so on – we can help.

We can help you because we now know that we can learn to manage stress – we can learn to chose our state – we can learn to be calm, relaxed, uninvolved, humourous – and so on, whatever is appropriate for you in any given or chosen situation we can teach you how to manage your state.

This of course does not mean that you will lack spontaneity – when it is appropriate to be, lets say, sad – or indeed happy, joyous or humourous.

Stress if it is appropriate for you and your situation in life – can be enjoyed as a challenge rather than as a threat!

Like I said – please feel free to talk to us – we will be delighted to hear from you.

However face to face Work, though not always essential, can often be much better, in that for example, by phone you may tell me that you are comfortable and relaxed, and face to face I can observe from your breathing, heart rate and so on that in fact you are uncomfortable.

Also see 'Therapeutic Breaks' for information on our accommodation –a sweet cosy cottage right on the banks of the beautiful River Greta which sleeps three people.
