CONTROLLING AND MANAGING PHYSICAL PAIN
Long lasting, chronic pain, which cannot efficiently be resolved by
medical treatment, often causes psychological difficulties such as
worry, anger, fear, depression, feelings of loss, anxiety - problems
with resting and sleeping, and difficulty in relating
I will help you to discover and resolve whatever causes you internal
tensions, by this I mean -
the
psychological and emotional tensions that intensifies and
exaggerates physical pain.
Undeniably, chronic pain can be a serious handicap to living a full
life. Maintaining an emotional and psychological positive attitude
whilst experiencing chronic pain is enormously difficult.
Always respectful of your pace, I will help direct your attention to
those areas that are compounding, and often exaggerating the
physical pain and I will find skills and strategies for you
personally that will bring about relaxation and change.
I provide a professional and compassionate support system to help
you achieve the positive changes that you need.
One simple example, you might be asked to note how many thoughts and
attitudes you have each day that are psychologically and emotionally
painful.
Then with support from me, you will be helped to recognise those
thoughts and attitudes that cause distress in your body. I will work
with you to deconstruct those particular thought patterns.
One of the problems with negative or destructive thoughts and
thought patterns is that they have become so habituated that they
are now deeply unconscious. That is you are no longer consciously
aware that they, the negative, destructive thought patterns, are
continuing deep within the mind, you can no longer
hear
them and yet they are actually affecting the sensations and tensions
in the body. I have skills that will enable you to become aware of
these deeply unconscious thoughts.
I am highly qualified in the safe use of hypnotic analgesia. Pain
causes anxiety, which increases the pain, which increases the
anxiety and so on. The deep relaxation afforded by hypnosis
interrupts the cycle.
The safe use of hypnosis in Pain Management has many advantages.
Hypnosis facilitates analgesia and can give you control over the
experience of pain and enable you to cease feeling helpless.
Hypnosis has no side effects nor is it addictive. I will in no way
be suggesting that your chronic pain is psychogenic.
We all know that every person is unique and you will be able to
experience trance and receive the benefits of hypnotic analgesia
safely, in your own unique way. Hypnotic techniques utilised by
the extraordinary wisdom of the mind have amazing results in
creating analgesia.
Mysterious as it may seem to you at the moment there are many
techniques of analgesia which will give you regular rest periods
from the pain. How does this work, you may be wondering? Several
ways, and I will talk with here about four of those ways.
One technique is
distraction
You will, I am sure, have heard many stories such as a person
severely injured in an accident who will keep on walking to find
help for themselves or for another person. Once help is found then
they actually feel the pain which up until then they had not
noticed! This kind of distraction we have formulated into techniques
which we can teach to you. Every day, several times a day you will
be able to use such skills as distraction. We can discover something
together, which will be able to become so fascinated with, that your
mind will experience distraction to such an extent that for regular
periods you will become unaware of the pain.
A second technique is
dissociation
In simple terms I can show you methods as if you become outside
for your body for a while as if you were
miles away.
In my profession we learnt how to teach dissociation by observing
how people (who dissociate) do it! Particularly young children.
Young children can often infuriate adults by their behaviour of
being miles
away. Young children spontaneously dissociate when
experiences are bewildering, confusing, boring or painful. Very wise
of them!
A third technique is
time
distortion
Again in simple terms, I do not want to get long winded here,
and of course you are always more than welcome to contact us for
further information, I will teach you how to distort time. That is,
if an intensely painful period of time lasts lets say an hour and a
half I can teach you how to make the experience of that period of
time much, much shorter An hour and half can feel like a few
minutes.
A fourth technique is
epistemological
metaphor Again in simple terms I enable you to develop
a metaphor which is unique to your knowing how you experience the
pain which will be something like this Its sharp and hard and
stabbing like a knife
.. together we can develop more information
about the sharp, hard stabbing knife in such as a way as we
transform the metaphor lets says into
something
softer, less hard no longer stabbing so that for longer and
longer periods of time the experience will be less uncomfortable
for you.
There are many more techniques such as these to create analgesia.

Choose a FREE ASSESSMENT CONSULTATION
You will be able to ask me all the questions you need and also
inform me of anything that you think and feel is important and
relevant. I will establish with you what you need and want to
achieve from your Therapy and structure for you a treatment plan.
However if I think that working with me does not seem to be the most
effective method of resolving your difficulties, symptoms or problem
I will be able to talk to you about other ways you can receive help
that could be more beneficial.
If you need further advice or information about this problem we will
be delighted to hear from you. You will find us friendly,
professional and we will treat anything you may say or ask of us in
the strictest confidence.
Your FREE ASSESSMENT CONSULTATION
will last for approximately one hour and can be done by phone, SKYPE,
or face to face at our consulting rooms in Keswick, Cumbria, in the
English Lake District. If travelling to Keswick for a weekly session
is unwieldy for you I can often conduct Therapy Sessions by phone.
However face to face Work, though not always essential, can often be
much better, in that for example, by phone you may tell me that you
are comfortable and relaxed, and face to face I can observe from you
breathing, heart rate and so on that in fact you are uncomfortable.
Also see 'Therapeutic Breaks' for information on our accommodation
a sweet cosy cottage right on the banks of the beautiful River
Greta which sleeps three people.
