Dream Work

Carl Jung, considered to be the ‘grandfather’ of psychotherapy – and actually also of Hypnotherapy - was a good dreamer, as he remarks in his memoirs. His dreams were his real self and the source of everything he did and everything he wrote; for him they represented the essence of his life.

“In the end,” he said, “the only events in my life worth telling are those when the imperishable world (the unconscious) erupted into this transitory one (the conscious). That is why I speak chiefly of inner experiences, amongst which I include my dreams and visions. These form the prima materia of my scientific work. They were the fiery magma out of which the stone that had to be worked was crystallized.”

(Extract taken from: DREAMS by Marie.Louise Von Franz – parenthesis added by Sally Stubbs.)

So, Carl G. Jung, considered throughout the world to be the grandfather of Dream Work – considers your dreams to be not only important – but creatively invaluable to your life.

Your ‘unconscious’ mind spontaneously produces several dreams during your period of sleep. The language of your dreams is formed from symbols – also – puns, metaphor and allegory. The symbols, which are often woven into a story, albeit sometimes a strange, weird or mysterious story, have meaning personal to you – and to your life. The ‘unconscious’ mind, through the symbolic images in your dreams, is generally attempting to enable you to function more fully and creatively in your life. At Excellent Rapport – we help you explore and discover what is meaningful to you in your dreams.

A simple example: A client has a dream about swimming in water amongst crocodiles. The Therapist helps this client to explore an area, or areas in their life where there is ‘danger’, and enables the client to make appropriate changes. Another client has a dream about swimming in water where there are crocodiles – but in this case – the client is a crocodile. This dream as you can appreciate has an entirely different meaning. The Therapist will, with this client, explore an area of their life which they had been perceiving as ‘dangerous’, but the wisdom of their unconscious is letting them know they are safe, that they themselves are powerful in their environment. I, Sally, as The Therapist, will enable this client to develop the qualities and resources symbolized by the crocodile and to use those resources, to transform what once were conflicts and problems, into Psychological and emotional strengths, in a productive and meaningful way in their everyday life.

An example of a resource that this client can make useful in their life could be that they are tougher skinned than they had believed, that they can chew on and digest more than they believed. Therapy will enable this client to develop these allegorical resources into practical every day skills.

If you are considering working with me to explore your dreams, it is probable that you have experienced a particularly unusual dream or pattern of dreams. Your dream information will definitely be meaningful to you, and I will enable you to explore what is important for you to understand and possibly resolve, heal or change, and bring valuable resources into your everyday life.

Recurring dreams are very important; the wisdom of the unconscious is using a large amount of your psychological energy to repeatedly give a message which will contain enormous value to you in your everyday life if you will choose to do the therapeutic work.

Nightmares are also very important.

A nightmare is the unconscious letting us know that there is an unresolved experience in our life, which is containing massive psychological energy, and which needs resolution.
